A delicate and preserved nature This incredible nature is particularly delicate and many parks and sanctuaries have been developed to preserve it. Indeed a great part of the fauna and flora you will discover during your stay is endemic to the Alps and the mountain environment.
The many forests your will cross on foot or on mountain bike are protected as well. You will easily notice the changing greenery depending on the altitude, and the role played by the alpine pastures when the forest gets less dense. These vast grass lands in high mountain grounds are used as pastures for shepherd’s flocks in the summer. That way they benefit from grass of excellent quality allowing them to produce the best cheese. The alpine pastures were created by Man but allow the organization of a whole mountain ecosystem.
Wandering beyond the pastures you will sometimes find yourself beholding magnificent glaciers. Despite their retreat these last years, it is still possible to approach these massive tongues of ice either by foot like in the Vanoise mountain chain, or by an easier way like in Chamonix where a train will take you to the Sea of Ice, or in
Les Houches where the Mont Blanc cable car will take you to the refuge of the Eagle Nest.
