Countless Alpine lakes
The lakes of the Alps are renowned for their purity and the colour of their water. Some are of glacial origin, meaning that they were formed in a hollow caused by the erosion of a glacier. The Ecrins National Park, between the Isère and Hautes-Alpes departments, has around fifteen of them. The splendid Lac de l'Eychauda and the Glacier d'Arsine lakes, for example, are fascinating to observe and are well worth a visit after a hike in the heart of the mountains.
At the foot of Mont Blanc, the high-altitude
lakes of Cheserys and
Lac Blanc are renowned and popular for admiring the legendary summit. The region also boasts a number of large, easily accessible lakes. The lakes of Annecy, Bourget and Aiguebelette, located in
Savoie, are also very accessible.
