Impressive summits
The
French Alps are bursting with high-mountain scenery.
Mont-Blanc, Europe's highest peak between
Haute-Savoie and Italy, rises to 4,809 metres. Nicknamed the "roof of Europe", it is a grail for mountaineers. The paradox of a summit that is difficult to reach but can be admired from hundreds of kilometres away.
Many other mountains in France promise a change of scenery. Further south, in the Hautes-Alpes, the Barre des Ecrins rises to 4,101 metres. Many other lesser summits, but just as magnificent, are within reach and accessible by hiking, such as the Pointe Portée in the Aravis range or the Grand Pic de Belledone in Isère.
